Weigh-In 1/17/11

Time to weigh-in. Remember to check back with Yes2Health each week...even if we gain, it's all part of the accountability process. Having to answer to your family and friends is a good thing...even if it's painful.

A tip I heard this week - figure out what your daily calorie intake should be, and eat accordingly. Here is the formula:

Calculate Your BMR

Your BMR is the amount of energy your body needs to function. We use about 60% of the calories we consume each day for basic bodily functions such as breathing.

More: BMR Defined

Other factors that influence your BMR are height, weight, age and sex.

Step one is to calculate your BMR with the following formula:

Women:
655 + (4.3 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years)

Men:
66 + (6.3 x weight in pounds) + (12.9 x height in inches) - (6.8 x age in years)

Please note that this formula applies only to adults.

Calculate Activity

Step two: In order to incorporate activity into your daily caloric needs, do the following calculation:

  • If you are sedentary : BMR x 20 percent
  • If you are lightly active: BMR x 30 percent
  • If you are moderately active (You exercise most days a week.): BMR x 40 percent

  • If you are very active (You exercise intensely on a daily basis or for prolonged periods.): BMR x 50 percent
  • If you are extra active (You do hard labor or are in athletic training.): BMR x 60 percent

Add this number to your BMR.

The result of this formula will be the number of calories you can eat every day and maintain your current weight. In order to lose weight, you'll need to take in fewer calories than this result.

As you lose weight, you can re-calculate the formula to assess your new BMR.

Weigh-In Time - 1/3/11

OK, Rodriguez family and friends, it's time to say YES2HEALTH! We are weighing in tomorrow, January 3rd in the a.m. We will have weigh-in each Monday morning. Use the same scale and wear the same clothes (or lack thereof) and post each Monday. This will help with those of us who need accountability measures to succeed. I will also add a place to share recipes and health tips.

You have two options for weigh-in. For the first week, you can post your weight, or if you are shy about providing your weight, you can indicate the amount of pounds you want to lose. In subsequent weeks, you can post your new weight, or the pounds you lost that week. It's up to you. Also be advised that my blogs are all under my profile for my class, which is why you see "Mrs. Rodriguez, the teacher who loves you." This does not mean my class will be looking at it. LOL!

So how does one post? Well, it helps to have a Gmail account, though it's not necessary. To post a comment, click on COMMENTS at the bottom of the post. Type in your comment (or your weight) then go from there. You will need to set up an account either through AIM, Gmail or the like. If you have any questions, call me on my cell after 2:30pm during the week, or anytime on the weekend.

GOOD LUCK... and enjoy this journey of saying YES2HEALTH!
